Scarless Breast Reduction
Over the past five years, Dr. Martin Moskovitz of Image Plastic Surgery in Paramus, New Jersey has worked at the forefront of a new technique in breast reduction, the "Scarless" Breast Reduction. His vast experience with this type of surgery and his training as an Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery has allowed him to teach this new and useful technique.
Dr. Moskovitz has been on national panels on the subject of breast liposuction reduction and he is the only surgeon teaching this procedure to other surgeons under the auspices of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. In addition, Dr. Martin Moskovitz has written several articles and a book chapter on the subject of "Scarless" Breast Reduction.
Liposuction breast reduction uses the proven safe technique of liposuction to remove extra fat from the breasts, reducing large breasts or fixing the problem of uneven breasts. The "Scarless" Breast Reduction surgery is performed with thin cannulas ("surgical straws"), which suck the fat from the breast through small, ¼ inch, incisions hidden on the breast. The traditional large cuts and scars are not needed for this type of breast liposuction surgery.
The operation is best for those patients that are not bothered by breast sagging and complain mostly of problems of breast and weight. It is also a fantastic option for patients with uneven breasts that desire the breasts to be smaller, even, and scar-free. Finally, it is an excellent option for patients with other medical conditions (diabetes, myasthenia, multiple sclerosis, asthma) who can not tolerate a larger, traditional operation.
Liposuction "Scarless" Breast Reduction Pre-Operative Care
Routine laboratory testing is often performed and photographs are taken to assess post-operative effectiveness. Mammograms are ordered in all patients 30 years old and over in order to detect any possible abnormalities and to serve as a baseline for post-operative comparison.
No aspirin, ibuprofen, or similar drugs should be taken within two weeks of surgery. These medications can cause serious excess bleeding during and after the operation. Smoking may affect the healing process so it is safer to quit smoking 2-3 weeks before the operation and for two weeks after.
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight of the night before your surgery. This includes coffee and juice in the morning. Oral medications can be taken with a sip of water.
Scarless Breast Reduction Operation
You should be at the office surgicenter or hospital at least 90 minutes prior to your scheduled surgical start time. Bring all paperwork from the office with you, as this will save time on the day of surgery.
The operation is very similar to traditional liposuction. Intravenous sedation anesthesia (MAC) will be used in the office surgery center, while general or MAC can be used at the hospital. Tumescent solution, a mixture of salt water, epinephrine (an agent to minimize bleeding), and lidocaine (an anesthetic) is placed in the breast through a tiny incision. A cannula, or surgical straw, is then inserted and the fat is removed. The operation takes a fraction of the time required for traditional surgery, usually one hour or less. No sutures are used and at the conclusion of surgery you are placed in a surgical bra and Ace wrap.
Scarless Breast Reduction Post-Operative Care
Be sure to change the dressing the evening after surgery at least once. The dressings will be changed again in the office the day after the surgery. No drains are needed. You will be placed into a supportive, sport-type bra, and should wear a bra when out and for at least 6 months to maximize the lift that the surgery can provide.
Keep exertion to a minimum for two weeks. Take the pain medicine as prescribed. The breasts will be swollen and bruised for 1-4 weeks and will then get somewhat "lumpy." This will resolve without treatment over the next 2-9 months. The scars will be minimal and will be almost undetectable after a year.
